Christmas??
For years I grew up waiting from Christmas to come. Christmas Eve was the day I finally got to open that so desired toy I had been wanting all year long. However, this has changed as I have come to understand that Christmas is much more than a gift. While others invest so much money on gifts that family members or friends might not even appreciate, there are children in the rest of the world that are struggling to survive for lack of food. For this reason I have decided to go this whole semester without buying anything that is not necessary. I want to learn to appreciate every single little thing I have and while I may not dress as excellent as others do, I believe I am doing so for a good cause. My friends laugh at me when I tell them that I want to strike against America's consumerism, but it is something I am very passionate about. And the Holiday season is the best time to do so. There is much more to life than luxuries, like having the best car, wearing the best and most expensive clothes, or applying the top make-up on the market. A person's exterior does not classify them as to who they really are. While I do acknowledge that there are times when the occasion requires us to dress formerly, I believe it can be done modestly. I was raised in the United States and I know it will be hard for me to continue this trend of not buying anything, but I know that I will be successful in communicating a good message while I do so. The only thing that justifies buying gifts for Christmas, in my opinion would be refraining from spending so much money throughout the year and waiting for this special day, this way the gifts that are given and received would be much more than greatly appreciated. Christmas is not a holiday based on consumerism, but rather the love that we receive from our families and friends while celebrating the birth of Jesus.

Volunteer: Club Activities
I love helping others, whether it be directly or indirectly. I find that volunteering for a great cause is truly rewarding and satisfactory. I know I'm not getting paid or receiving something in return for the things that I do, but I enjoy the pleasure that it brings me as a person.
Everywhere I go I make sure that a part of me is dedicated to working with others to accomplish a great cause. As a first year student at CBU I figured that being a full time student was not as rewarding as giving back to my community. It was then that I decided to start a club of my own. Something that was different and not already active.
After one semester of several issues that involved starting this club, it was finally active. To this point in time the club is an official club at CBU and is called the FAITH club, which stands for Faith Action Integrity, Together with our Heritage. The purpose of the club is to integrate the CBU community and help the Riverside community as a whole. I discovered that not many clubs already active were focusing on helping the community outside of CBU, and when several students on campus found out about the plans we have as a club, they seemed very interested.
We want to focus on Operation Christmas Child and make sure that our CBU community becomes involved in cooperating with the Harvest Church to make sure that children receive gifts this Christmas season. Also, our plans to grow in helping the Riverside community will involve participating in conjunction with the Keep Riverside Clean & Beautiful organization so that we can indeed keep Riverside clean. There are so many plans that lie ahead, and as President of the FAITH club I know that working together we will accomplish every single one of them.
I still don't know my beat, but I sure know that I would love covering campus activities and how the CBU community responds to them.

Confusion
At first I was lost and confused about which topic to cover now that I am part of newspaper production. I never thought the simple task of looking for a topic that I am interested in and writing about would be so difficult. That is until I decided that I would cover the story on the fitExpold that was held recently on campus. I finally discovered that I liked writing about health and about new ideas that people can consider when making decisions about healthy eating habits and also about fitness activities.
Initially I was very interested in writing about politics and issues pertaining to the distribution of financial aid within the city of Riverside. I thought it would have been quite fascinating to keep people informed about the decisions that our local city council members made in regards to the changes that were made in the city itself. I think I would still be interested in covering that topic, but I still don't know which topic would be more interesting for me to cover.
I am the kind of person that is widely attracted by a series a things rather than by one thing, so it is very hard for me to base my decision on my interests now because I know that along the way I will become interested in writing about many more things.
As time passes by I think it would be very important for me to write about various topics so that I can finally decide and focus on one beat. I am still a bit confused about features, news, perspectives and other topics and what all those things entail. It is the first time that I am involved in writing newspaper style other than the practice I received while taking the course on intro to journalism, in which I learned many of the things that I am going over now. I guess that class was essential because now I am actually using all that I learned there for actual production of the articles I write about.
To this point I would say that the beat I want to follow is focused on health, but then again I also love culture and politics so it is a very hard decision to make. Hopefully I will find what I truly want along the way.
